Bolt Circle: Spacing between bolts?
Sixteen 3/4″ diameter American Standard Hexagon bolts (and nuts) are to be used to connect a plate with a housing. If socket-wrench assembly is to used, what is the minimum spacing between bolt centers? How close can the bolts be to an adjacent housing?

Using Machinery’s Handbook, on Page 1464-5 is a table of clearances for bolts when using socket-wrenches. The minimum counter-bore diameter for a 3/4″ hex bolt is 1.570″, so the wide part of the adjacent hex bolt cannot come into the area defined by the 1.570″ circle centered around the hex bolt being removed.
The width across the corners of a 3/4″ hex bolt is max 1.299″ (See page1448, Table 3), so the min center to center distance between bolts is:
dmin = (1.299″+1.570″)/2
dmin = 1.435″
The bolts must be placed such that the socket wrench does not hit any adjacent housing as well, so the min distance is 1/2 the counterbore diameter, or 0.785″
